When driving in your car, you've just overtaken another vehicle, only to realise you need to slow down and turn off at a junction. Understanding this would be grossly inconsiderate to the vehicle you've just overtaken, and also make you look like a fool. You don't turn off and continue on the existing route, as if that's always where you intend to be going.
